Steve from London went with a seriously light set of carbon clinchers (tubeless ready) – my XCS 38mm rims (U-shaped and 25mm wide) laced to Bitex R9/10 hubs. I used Sapim CX-Ray spokes radially front and 2X rear for a 20/24 configuration. They came out at 1390g and cost Steve just £690 (5% off and £655 if you’re a previous 23mm customer).
Russell from Aberdeenshire wanted a solid set of disc-brake wheels for commuting and gravel riding. He went with a set of Ryde Pulse Comp disc rims laced up with Sapim CX-Ray silver spokes in a 28H/28H configuration to a Hope Pro4 rear hub with 142 x 12mm thru axle and SON 28 dynamo 15mm thru axle. The build came in under 2kg.
Neil from Alfreton originally sent me a set of carbon wheels on DT Swiss 240s hubs to have trued. I discovered cracks in the rims at the nipple eyelets and suggested having the wheels re-built onto a set of my XCS carbon rims. I recommended a deeper 44mm rear and shallower 38mm front rim for improved aerodynamics and handling. These were the 3K weave matt option, tubular and they were laced up with Sapim CX-Ray spokes and brass nipples. Total weight came to 1227g.
David from Kent sent me two sets of hubs to have some wheels built – one a set of Hope Pro III’s for building onto a set of Farsport 38mm carbon rims and the other, a set of Chris King R45 hubs for building onto HED Belgium Plus rims. They were both laced up with Sapim CX-Ray black spokes and brass nipples and weighed in at 1565g for the Hope / carbon wheels and 1499g for the Chris King / HED wheels.
David used the HED wheels for a trip in the USA – a multi day ride in the Rocky Mountains and thought they were ‘smooth as silk’.
Alistair from London wanted a low-cost good set of replacement wheels for his old Pacenti SL23’s and I suggested going for the rims that have replaced the SL23’s – Pacenti’s Forza rims. Laced up with a set of value for money light weight Bitex RAR9 / RAR10 hubs and Sapim Laser spokes (Sapim Race on the rear drive side) laced 20/24, the build came in at 1487g and cost him £374 for the set.
Mark from York wanted a sturdy and super reliable set of hand-built thru-axle disc-specific wheels for riding the 2017 London Edinburgh London (LEL) 1400km (800+ miles) audax. I went with my favourite hubs and rims suggestion which was a DT Swiss 350 142 x 12mm thru axle rear and SON Delux 12 front dynamo laced to DT Swiss 411 disc rims with Sapim Race spokes in a 32/32 3X configuration. The wheels came out just under 2kg. Best of luck to Mark!
After having these rims kicking around for a personal project for months, I finally gave in and built them up for a customer than had been asking for something similar. Although having used my XCS carbon rims on several builds and being a big fan of them, he wanted something a tad more bling for a new Pinarello bike build. I suggested the Mavic Cosmic Pro SL’s laced to a set of DT Swiss 180 Carbon Ceramic hubs with CX-Ray spokes.
They weren’t the cheapest build, but they came out a lot lighter than the stock Mavic factory build. Needless to say Paul was very happy with them.
