Nick from London was after a set of wheels that could be used for a number of purposes: audax, light touring and faster club runs, and budget was flexible. After my recommendation we went with best alloy rims available, HED Belgium Plus, laced to DT Swiss 240s rear hub and a SON 28 front hub with Sapim CX-Ray spokes and brass nipples in a 32/32 3X configuration. Total weight was under 2kg – ideal for a dynamo-based wheelset.
Liam from Nottingham wanted a semi-deep yet light carbon build on quality hubs. I suggested going for a set of tubeless ready 50mm XCS Carbon rims (25mm wide) laced up to DT Swiss 240s hubs with Sapim CX-Ray spokes. He agreed and I built them up during December – 20-spokes front radial lacing and 24-spokes rear with 2X lacing.
Despite using brass nipples for longevity, the build came out to a featherweight 1530g before fitting tyres and only cost Liam £1000. I also fitted a set of Schwalbe Pro One tubeless tyres with Stans sealant ready for collection.
Neil from Alfreton originally sent me a set of carbon wheels on DT Swiss 240s hubs to have trued. I discovered cracks in the rims at the nipple eyelets and suggested having the wheels re-built onto a set of my XCS carbon rims. I recommended a deeper 44mm rear and shallower 38mm front rim for improved aerodynamics and handling. These were the 3K weave matt option, tubular and they were laced up with Sapim CX-Ray spokes and brass nipples. Total weight came to 1227g.
Sponsored rider, Tom from Glossop went for another set of my carbon rim builds, but opted for some deeper 50mm rims over his previous 38mm rims for their added stiffness and aero advantages for sprint finishes. He also opted for DT Swiss 240s hubs for reduced weight and the de facto best spokes available for racing, Sapim CX-Ray. The total wheelset weight was 1563g. E/1/2 next season, Tom – go smash it!
Hunt 55mm rear carbon rebuild for Jon in Kent with an upgrade to the stock hub and spokes that come with the wheels. Now sporting a DT Swiss 240s hub and Sapim CX-Ray spokes.
Last week I built a set of all-rounder wheels for Paul in Aston-on-Trent. They were HED Ardennes + rims (same as Belgium +) with a 20.6mm internal width, laced to DT Swiss 240s hubs 24/28 using Sapim CX-Ray spokes. Total weight before fitting tyres was 1570g.
I also fitted a set of Vittoria Corsa Speed tubeless tyres using Stan’s NoTubes sealant and valves.
High-end disc-brake / carbon wheelset built last week for Richard in London: DT Swiss 240s thru-axle hubs laced to XCS 38mm deep x 25mm wide disc-specific tubeless ready carbon rims with Sapim CX-Ray spokes. 24-spoke front 2X, and 28-spoke rear 3X. Total weight: 1614g.
Getting the week’s last built in before some riding this weekend: a rear disc wheel for Mark in Oxfordshire to complete a stunning wheelset with a front SON dynamo. Pacenti SL25 disc rim laced to DT Swiss 240s rear with Sapim CX-Ray spokes 32H and 3X. Weight – 884g.
Top end audax disc brake build for Rob in Essex: Pacenti SL25 rims on DT 240s rear hub with Campagnolo freehub body fitted and SON 28 front dynamo hub. Built 3X throughout with Sapim CX-Ray spokes. Total weight 1981g.
ENVE Classic 25 rebuild for Alexis in London – 25mm profile sub-300g carbon ENVE tubular rims built 24/28 on DT Swiss 240s hubs with Sapim CX-Ray spokes and brass nipples. 1134g build – lightest wheelset passed through my hands!
