Andrew from Hertfordshire wanted two wheelsets that had the same spec hubs for each of his touring / gravel / adventure bikes – one had standard 700c wheels and the other, 27.5 / 650b wheels. They needed to be be strong enough to carry rider and gear for multi-day long distance riding on poor road surfaces.
The 700c wheelset was built on DT Swiss RR 421 DB asymmetric disc brake rims with White Industries CLD 142 x 12 thru axle rear hub and SRAM XD driver on the rear and SON Delux 12 thru axle dynamo hub. Laced 28/32 with Sapim CX-Ray spokes and black brass nipples the wheels weighed in at 1913g.
The 650b wheelset was built on DT Swiss R500 gravel-specific rims with the same hubs and spokes as the 700c wheelset and weighed in at 1972g.
Simon from London wanted a set of light carbon clincher wheels based around some top quality hubs for thrashing around on trips away in Yorkshire and the Lake District on his new bike. I suggested a set of XCS 30 tubeless rims laced 20/24 to Chris King R45 hubs, which he went with. The hubs were the fetching new Turquoise colour scheme and were laced up with Sapim CX-Ray black spokes and brass nipples. Total weight came in at 1478g.
A new back wheel for Rob in Derby: DT Swiss RR440 asymmetric rim laced to a DT 350 Classic hub with Sapim Race spokes – 32-spokes and 3X lacing. Total weight: 957g.
Fast and super-strong carbon 29er build for Clint in Mansfield (near Sherwood Pines – lucky guy): Hope Pro 4 thru-axle hubs laced with Sapim D-Light spokes 3X to 30mm wide asymmetric carbon XC rims. Total weight: 1835g.
Solid all-purpose riding wheels for Bill in London: DT Swiss RR440 Asymmetric rear rim and standard front built 28H rear 3X DS/2X NDS using Sapim Race and 24H front built radially on Sapim Laser using Novatec F582-SL and A291-SL hubs.
