Steve from Norfolk’s Pacenti rims wore out and he opted to upgrade to HED Belgium Plus as a replacement rim. His Chris King R45 hubs were re-laced with new Sapim CX-Ray black spokes and black brass nipples in a 28/32 2X/3X configuration. They weighed in at a fairly light 1637g.
Two years after building his Chris King R45 Gold hub on HED Ardennes rims, he’d finally worn the rims out including on the cobbles of Roubaix, and asked me to rebuild them on Pacenti Forza rims. Laced again with Sapim Laser / Race spokes, the wheels came out to 1560g – a bit lighter than the previous build.
Andy from London wanted a rather fetching old set of pink Chris King R45 hubs laced up to a set of tubeless ready 50mm XCS Carbon rims with Sapim CX-Ray spokes. They turned out beautifully light at only a gram over 1.5kg and looked stunning on his new Bowman Palace build.
Mark from London wanted a high end alloy wheelset for his classic 90’s Bianchi steel frame. The build was Chris King R45 silver hubs with ceramic bearings laced to a set of HED Belgium Plus rims using silver Sapim CX-Ray spokes in a 24/28 configuration. The build weighed in at 1566g.
David from Kent sent me two sets of hubs to have some wheels built – one a set of Hope Pro III’s for building onto a set of Farsport 38mm carbon rims and the other, a set of Chris King R45 hubs for building onto HED Belgium Plus rims. They were both laced up with Sapim CX-Ray black spokes and brass nipples and weighed in at 1565g for the Hope / carbon wheels and 1499g for the Chris King / HED wheels.
David used the HED wheels for a trip in the USA – a multi day ride in the Rocky Mountains and thought they were ‘smooth as silk’.
Simon from London wanted a set of light carbon clincher wheels based around some top quality hubs for thrashing around on trips away in Yorkshire and the Lake District on his new bike. I suggested a set of XCS 30 tubeless rims laced 20/24 to Chris King R45 hubs, which he went with. The hubs were the fetching new Turquoise colour scheme and were laced up with Sapim CX-Ray black spokes and brass nipples. Total weight came in at 1478g.
John in London picked a superb combination of hubs and rims for the ultimate alloy road build: Chris King R45 red stainless steel bearing hubs laced to HED Belgium Plus rims with black Sapim CX-Ray spokes laced 24/28 2X front and 3X rear. Total weight: 1537g.
This build is available for £1078 GBP.
The ultimate gravel / disc wheelset for Greg in London: Chris King R45 disc hubset laced to XCS 38mm carbon disc specific rims using Sapim CX-Ray silver spokes and brass nipples. Laced 24/28 2X front and 3X rear. Total weight: 1703g
Re-built a set of Chris King R45 hubs onto new DT Swiss RR440 rims (asymmetric rear). Laced with Sapim Race spokes – 32-spokes per wheel and weighing in under 1700g. The best alloy rims you can get… close tie with perhaps HED Belgium’s in terms of roundness / manufacturing quality.
