Andrew from Hertfordshire wanted two wheelsets that had the same spec hubs for each of his touring / gravel / adventure bikes – one had standard 700c wheels and the other, 27.5 / 650b wheels. They needed to be be strong enough to carry rider and gear for multi-day long distance riding on poor road surfaces.
The 700c wheelset was built on DT Swiss RR 421 DB asymmetric disc brake rims with White Industries CLD 142 x 12 thru axle rear hub and SRAM XD driver on the rear and SON Delux 12 thru axle dynamo hub. Laced 28/32 with Sapim CX-Ray spokes and black brass nipples the wheels weighed in at 1913g.
The 650b wheelset was built on DT Swiss R500 gravel-specific rims with the same hubs and spokes as the 700c wheelset and weighed in at 1972g.
John from Lincolnshire wanted a dynamo front wheel for audaxing and general night riding, and went with a black SON Delux 32-spoke dynamo hub laced to a Mavic CXP Pro rim using Sapim Laser spokes. The wheel came out weighing a tad over a kilogram.
Russell from Aberdeenshire wanted a solid set of disc-brake wheels for commuting and gravel riding. He went with a set of Ryde Pulse Comp disc rims laced up with Sapim CX-Ray silver spokes in a 28H/28H configuration to a Hope Pro4 rear hub with 142 x 12mm thru axle and SON 28 dynamo 15mm thru axle. The build came in under 2kg.
Mark from York wanted a sturdy and super reliable set of hand-built thru-axle disc-specific wheels for riding the 2017 London Edinburgh London (LEL) 1400km (800+ miles) audax. I went with my favourite hubs and rims suggestion which was a DT Swiss 350 142 x 12mm thru axle rear and SON Delux 12 front dynamo laced to DT Swiss 411 disc rims with Sapim Race spokes in a 32/32 3X configuration. The wheels came out just under 2kg. Best of luck to Mark!
Tim from Cheshire wanted a reliable wheelset for audaxing with a dynamo hub capable of both charging devices and powering a set of lights. We agreed to get built a DT Swiss 350 ‘Hugi’ rear hub and Schmidt SON 28 dynamo on Mavic Open Pro using Sapim Race spokes. At under £500 this is a classic long distance hand-built wheelset that is both reliable and functional and also fairly light weight.
Alex from Denmark went for a serious audax build designed for functionality, low weight and longevity, picking high quality parts that will cope with the rigours of a season of randoneering including the Trans Continental Race from Belgium to Greece over the summer.
The build consisted of a set of HED Belgium Plus disc rims in a 32/32 Sapim CX-Ray spoke configuration with brass nipples laced to a SON Delux 12 thru-axle dynamo hub and a White Industries CLD 142 x 12 rear thru axle hub with 11-speed road freehub. Total weight came to 1983g which is low for a robust high spoke count disc-brake build with dynamo hub.
Chris from Derby asked me to build him a dynamo disc-brake wheel to use with another carbon build I did for him earlier this year which would allow him to run either a standard non-dynamo front wheel for day rides or a dynamo front wheel for winter and night riding. The result was a 32-spoke SON Delux with 12mm thru-axle laced to a 38mm XCS carbon rim using Sapim CX-Ray spokes. Total weight came in at just over a kilogram.
One of last week’s builds for Jamie in London – a beautiful audaxing wheelset for a Genesis Datum: Velocity Aileron 28mm deep disc rims laced to a SON 28 15mm thru axle dynamo front and Shimano XTR standard QR on the rear. Used Sapim Race spokes and brass nipples.
Quality audax disc build for Andrew in Hertfordshire: HED Belgium Plus disc rims laced 3X with Sapim CX-Ray spokes to a SON 28 15 thru axle dynamo hub up front and a White Industries CLD 142x12mm thru axle rear with Campagnolo freehub.
First build of 2016!
Schmidt SON28 dynamo hub built on an Ambrosio Excellight rim in silver using 32 x Sapim D-light spokes and brass nipples.
