Ed from Surrey was after a value for money disc-brake audax build with a dynamo hub. He needed thru-axles and 650b rims. I suggested going for an SP Dynamo PD8-X and Bitex MTR12 rear hub and using a 28/28 spoke configuration laced with Sapim Race spokes to DT Swiss R500 650b rims. The build weighed in at just over 2kg.
Chris from Gloucestershire sent me his Shimano CX75 front hub for building into a set of wheels and asked for a Bitex R106 rear hub and DT Swiss R500 650b rims. They were built 28-spoke front 2X and 32-spoke rear 3X using Sapim D-Light spokes and brass nipples and weighed in at 1832g.
Two years after building his Chris King R45 Gold hub on HED Ardennes rims, he’d finally worn the rims out including on the cobbles of Roubaix, and asked me to rebuild them on Pacenti Forza rims. Laced again with Sapim Laser / Race spokes, the wheels came out to 1560g – a bit lighter than the previous build.
Martyn from Derbyshire asked for a set of fast carbon wheels and wanted a quality hubset to boot. After discussions I built him 50mm front and 60mm rear XCS Carbon tubeless ready rims on DT Swiss 240s straight pull hubs with Sapim CX-Ray spokes. They built up well and weighed in at 1669g.
John from Bristol came to me for another set of wheels. He was taking his first plunge into dynamo disc-brakes on a road bike. I built him a set of Pacenti Forza disc rims laced to an Ultegra RS770 rear hub and SON Delux 12 front hub with silver Sapim CX-Ray spokes and brass nipples in 32/32 3X spoke configuration. The build came to a total weight of 1929g.
Toby from London asked me to rebuild his Campagnolo Record hubs onto a set of HED Belgium Plus rims. I gave the hubs a complete strip-down and re-build along with a replacement of the freehub due to bearings wear, then built the wheels up using Sapim Race spokes and brass nipples. Total weight came to 1757g.
I always recommend DT Swiss components for hand-built wheels as a first call as they represent excellent value for money and amazing versatility with easy serviceable hubs, swappable end-caps and superbly made rims whether sleeve joined or welded.
Anthony from Nottingham wanted a very strong set of wheels for audaxing / long distance riding with luggage, and I immediately suggested going for the new DT Swiss RR 511 tubeless rims with 32mm profile and 18mm internal width. Laced up with DT’s 350 ‘Hugi’ Classic hubs and using Sapim Race spokes with brass nipples in a 32/32 3X configuration, the wheels weren’t light, but at under 2kg they weren’t too heavy for a ‘touring’ wheelset and will be sure to handle very rigorous conditions very well.
