Tim from Warrington was after a new disc brake dynamo wheelset for his new road bike capable of running 32mm tyres. He went with a set of Kinlin XR-26RT asymmetric disc rims laced up to a SON 28 15mm thru axle dynamo and DT Swiss 350 142 x 12 thru axle rear hub. They were laced 28/28 with Sapim CX-Ray spokes and brass nipples. Total weight came to 2010g.
Neil from Hampshire was after a set of robust disc-brake wheels for riding around the lanes and gravel tracks of the New Forest with a dynamo for charging devices on longer rides. We went with a set of DT Swiss RR411 rims laced to a Bitex BX106R rear hub and SON Delux 12 front hub with silver Sapim D-Light spokes. The build came in at a stunningly light (for a disc dynamo build) 1899g.
Kieran from Hampshire was after a set of adventure / gravel wheels with a dynamo for his 650b Sonder Frontier frame. I suggested looking at DT Swiss rims and rear hub with an SP dynamo. He went with DT XM401 rims and 350 rear hub with an SP Dynamo PD8-X front laced up with Sapim Race spokes in a 32/32 3X pattern. They weighed in at at just over 2kg.
Regular customer Alistair from London needed a set of decent quality carbon wheels for training and racing that weren’t going to cost the earth. Therefore he went with a set of Venn Cycling 50.7mm carbon clincher / tubeless ready rims laced up to Bitex RAF9 / RAR10 hubs with Sapim CX-Ray spokes. These rims are internal nipple versions which improve aerodynamics and have a lovely clean look. The wheelset weighs in at 1548g and priced at £788.
Steve from Norfolk’s Pacenti rims wore out and he opted to upgrade to HED Belgium Plus as a replacement rim. His Chris King R45 hubs were re-laced with new Sapim CX-Ray black spokes and black brass nipples in a 28/32 2X/3X configuration. They weighed in at a fairly light 1637g.
The first two builds that came to me while in the new premises were dynamos. Tom from London and Dave from Newcastle-upon-Tyne both wanting SON dynamos – one on a Mavic Open Pro and the other on a new 2323 light alloy rim. Now to find the best place to photograph wheels…
Ed from Surrey was after a value for money disc-brake audax build with a dynamo hub. He needed thru-axles and 650b rims. I suggested going for an SP Dynamo PD8-X and Bitex MTR12 rear hub and using a 28/28 spoke configuration laced with Sapim Race spokes to DT Swiss R500 650b rims. The build weighed in at just over 2kg.
Chris from Gloucestershire sent me his Shimano CX75 front hub for building into a set of wheels and asked for a Bitex R106 rear hub and DT Swiss R500 650b rims. They were built 28-spoke front 2X and 32-spoke rear 3X using Sapim D-Light spokes and brass nipples and weighed in at 1832g.
